The Unsolved Murder of Terri “Missy” Bevers

Nearly a decade after a Texas fitness instructor was murdered inside a church, surveillance footage, unanswered questions, and an unidentified suspect remain at the center of the investigation.

On the morning of April 18, 2016, 45-year-old Terri Leann “Missy” Bevers was murdered inside Creekside Church of Christ in Midlothian, Texas, while preparing to lead an early morning fitness class. Her death would become one of the most widely discussed unsolved homicide cases in Texas, largely because of surveillance footage showing an unidentified person dressed in tactical police-style clothing moving through the church before her arrival.

Despite years of investigation, numerous tips, and extensive public attention, the individual responsible has never been publicly identified. For Missy's family, the passage of time has brought no definitive answers about who killed her or why.

A Life Centered on Family and Fitness

Born on August 9, 1970, in Graham, Texas, Missy was a wife, mother of three daughters, and dedicated fitness instructor. She lived with her family in Red Oak, Texas, and worked with Camp Gladiator, leading boot camp-style fitness classes at Creekside Church of Christ.

Through her work, Missy encouraged others to remain active, challenge themselves, and pursue healthier lives. She had established a regular routine of leading early morning classes, often using the church parking lot as a gathering place for participants.

On the evening of April 17, 2016, Missy informed her students that the following morning's workout would be moved inside the church because of expected severe weather. The class was scheduled to begin at 5:00 a.m.

The Morning of April 18, 2016

Before Missy arrived at the church, an unidentified individual had already entered the building. Interior surveillance cameras recorded the person walking through hallways while wearing what appeared to be a police tactical uniform, including a helmet, gloves, and a protective vest marked “POLICE.”

The individual was seen opening doors, breaking glass, and moving through different areas of the church while carrying tools. The clothing concealed much of the person's appearance, making identification difficult.

At approximately 4:18 a.m., Missy arrived and began bringing exercise equipment inside in preparation for her class. Investigators have not publicly disclosed the precise circumstances of her encounter with the unidentified individual.

Shortly after 5:00 a.m., a participant arriving for the workout discovered Missy unresponsive inside the church. Emergency personnel responded, but she was pronounced dead. Investigators determined that she had suffered multiple puncture wounds to her head and chest. Investigative documents described the injuries as consistent with tools carried by the unidentified person.

The Person Captured on Surveillance

The church's interior surveillance footage became one of the most significant pieces of publicly known evidence in the investigation. It showed an individual whose identity and sex could not be conclusively determined.

Investigators paid particular attention to the person's unusual walking pattern. The individual appeared to move slowly and unevenly, at times seeming to have difficulty moving one leg or foot.

The distinctive gait generated considerable public speculation. However, investigators cautioned that the walking pattern could have been influenced by the weight of the tactical equipment or a temporary physical condition.

In 2021, forensic podiatrist Dr. Michael Nirenberg reviewed the footage at the FBI's request. He concluded that the individual's sex could not reliably be determined from the gait alone.

Was the Murder Connected to a Burglary?

Investigators initially considered whether Missy had interrupted a burglary. The surveillance footage showed the unidentified individual moving through the church and damaging property before her arrival.

However, authorities reportedly found no significant property missing from the building. Missy's personal belongings, including her purse and iPad, remained at the scene.

These circumstances raised questions about whether the apparent break-in was genuine or whether the damage served another purpose. Authorities have not publicly established whether Missy was deliberately targeted or unexpectedly encountered someone already inside the church.

The central question remains: who was inside Creekside Church before dawn, and why were they there?

A Mysterious Vehicle Near the Church

Another significant investigative lead involved a vehicle recorded near SWFA Outdoors, a sporting goods business located close to Creekside Church.

Surveillance footage captured what investigators believed could be a 2010–2012 Nissan Altima entering the business's parking lot around 2:00 a.m. on the morning of Missy's murder.

The driver appeared to circle the property, flash the vehicle's headlights, and briefly park in a secluded area before leaving toward U.S. Highway 287.

Investigators sought information about the vehicle and its driver, although they have not publicly established a definitive connection between the vehicle and Missy's homicide.

Years of Investigation

In the years following the murder, investigators examined numerous leads and interviewed people connected to Missy. Her husband and father-in-law also received public attention during the investigation, but police verified their alibis.

A bloodstained shirt belonging to her father-in-law became the subject of speculation after being mentioned in a search warrant. Subsequent forensic testing determined that the blood was canine rather than human, consistent with an explanation involving a fight between dogs.

Public interest in the case has remained substantial. News coverage, podcasts, billboards, and reward offers have helped maintain awareness of the investigation. By 2021, a reward of $150,000 had been publicized for information that could help identify the killer.

As of 2026, the Midlothian Police Department continues to regard Missy's homicide as an active investigation. Authorities have indicated that persons of interest remain under consideration, although no one has been publicly identified as responsible and no arrest has been announced.

A Family Still Waiting for Answers

Nearly ten years after her death, the questions surrounding Missy's murder remain unresolved. Who was the person wearing tactical clothing inside the church? Was Missy's arrival anticipated, or did she unexpectedly encounter the individual? And what information might finally establish the killer's identity?

For Missy's family, particularly her three daughters, the case represents far more than surveillance footage or an unsolved mystery. It is the loss of a mother whose life included family, friendships, meaningful work, and the encouragement she offered others through fitness.

Missy Bevers was 45 years old when her life was taken. Her story remains a reminder that behind every unsolved homicide is a person whose life mattered and loved ones who continue to seek answers.
