Jennifer lived at Misty Glen Apartments with her mother, Vicki Lancaster, her younger sister, and her daughters. On the evening of their disappearance, Jennifer reportedly told her family she was taking some quilts and baby clothes to be laundered. She left the apartment with Sidney and Monique sometime around 8 p.m., reportedly planning to visit a male acquaintance. Although the apartment had its own washer and dryer, there was nothing at the time to suggest that Jennifer's departure would become the beginning of a decades long mystery.

As the hours passed and the family realized they could not locate Jennifer or the children, concern grew. Jennifer's 1994 Jeep Cherokee was eventually discovered abandoned in the parking lot of an apartment complex near Southeast 29th Street and California Avenue in Topeka. The vehicle was missing the children's car seats, its keys, and personal belongings. Jennifer's family also noticed that some of her possessions were missing from the apartment, suggesting she may have been quietly moving items before leaving. Yet other belongings, including her cellular phone and most recent paycheck, had been left behind. Her bank account reportedly contained very little money.

These details raised questions about whether Jennifer had planned to leave or whether something unexpected had happened that evening. Investigators were left trying to piece together the circumstances surrounding the family's disappearance, but no definitive explanation emerged.

Several weeks later, an unexpected piece of correspondence brought another possible lead. Jennifer's mother received a mailing from a Steak 'n Shake restaurant in St. Louis, Missouri, addressed to Jennifer. The correspondence thanked her for submitting a comment card about the restaurant's food and service. Hoping the card might provide evidence that her daughter was alive or reveal where she had gone, Vicki contacted the restaurant to request the original. Unfortunately, the comment card had already been destroyed. Without the handwriting or additional identifying information, the mailing could not establish whether Jennifer had actually visited the restaurant or when the comment had been submitted.

The possibility that Jennifer and her daughters had traveled to Missouri added another unanswered question to an already complicated investigation.

Jennifer's disappearance was particularly heartbreaking because of the ages of her children. Sidney was barely a toddler, and Monique was still a newborn. Neither child was old enough to communicate independently, seek help, or explain what had happened.
