Shelly Renee Markley was 32 years old when she disappeared from Bristolville, Ohio, on December 15, 1995. She was a white female, 5 feet 4 inches tall and weighed approximately 125 pounds. She had brown hair and blue eyes. Markley was born November 16, 1963. At the time of her disappearance, she had freckles, pierced ears and a scar on her right forearm. She was also known to smoke approximately one pack of Marlboro cigarettes per day. 

Johnny J. Markley Jr., also known as John, was 36 years old. He was a White male, 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighed approximately 150 pounds, and had brown hair and green eyes. The Ohio Attorney General lists his date of birth as July 8, 1959.

On the morning of December 15, the Markley's were at their home on Greenville Road in rural Bristolville. Their five children left for school that morning. When the children returned home that afternoon, their parents were gone and the residence was unlocked. Investigators found several items out of place, including an unlocked gun cabinet, although no guns were reported missing. A lock box was also found open, with its contents removed and placed on a dresser. 

The Markleys' red and silver 1990 Chevrolet pickup truck was also missing. The truck was later found locked and abandoned approximately 10 miles from their home. The Markleys' cellular phone was found inside the vehicle. 

A $1,000 check made payable to cash was written on the day of the disappearance. A bank teller at a Bank One drive-through in Bloomfield, Ohio, recalled seeing John Markley driving the pickup, with Shelly Markley writing the check on the dashboard. An unidentified man was reportedly seated next to Shelly in the truck. This is the last known reported sighting of Shelly Markley.
