On July 12, 1987, 18-year-old Vickie Carriere spent the day with her fiancé, Joseph Phillips, at his family's fishing camp before the two headed back to Waggaman, Louisiana. Vickie was eight and a half months pregnant with the couple's son and was just days away from giving birth. Her family was excited to welcome their first grandson, and Vickie was looking forward to becoming a mother.

According to Joseph Phillips, they stopped at the Time Saver convenience store in the 8600 block of River Road at approximately 5:00 p.m. He told investigators he went inside the store to buy a soda for Vickie and a chocolate milk for himself. When he came back outside a few minutes later, Vickie was gone. Phillips also stated that a bundle of her clothing had disappeared. Vickie has never been seen again.

When she failed to return home that evening, her parents immediately became concerned. They knew it wasn't like Vickie to leave without contacting anyone, especially with her due date so close. Their fears only grew as the days passed. Vickie never showed up for her baby shower, and her due date came and went without any sign of her or her unborn son. 

At the time of her disappearance, Vickie worked as a clerk at Avondale Marine Shipyard. More than 38 years have passed, but her disappearance remains unsolved. 

Investigation

Investigators questioned Joseph Phillips, Vickie's fiancé and the father of her unborn child. He has long been considered a suspect in the investigation, although authorities never publicly announced enough evidence to file criminal charges against him.

Phillips declined to take a polygraph examination during the investigation. While refusing a polygraph is not evidence of guilt and cannot be used to prove someone committed a crime, it became one of the many details that drew public attention to the case.

Joseph Phillips died in 2002 at the age of 47 of drowning. Because no one has ever been charged in connection with Vickie's disappearance, the case remains open and unsolved.

Vickie  was a daughter and an expectant mother eagerly waiting to meet her baby boy. More than three decades later, her family continues searching for answers about what happened to both Vickie and the son she never had the chance to hold.
