On the afternoon of January 10, 1985, six-year-old Michael Ray Mayfield and his five-year-old sister, Pamela Mayfield, left Betsy Ross Elementary School in northeast Houston, Texas, and began the walk home they had made many times before. The children were living with their grandmother, who served as their primary caregiver, and home was less than a mile from the school. They never arrived.

Witnesses reported seeing Michael and Pamela at a neighborhood park after school. Later that afternoon, they were seen getting into a green passenger car with an unidentified man. According to witnesses, there was no indication that either child was forced into the vehicle or that a struggle took place. Investigators later said they believed the children may have recognized or trusted the driver because both had reportedly been taught not to get into a car with strangers. Despite that belief, no suspect has ever been publicly identified.

As the investigation got underway, detectives interviewed family members and others who knew the children. Michael and Pamela's parents were questioned, along with relatives and acquaintances, but authorities have never publicly named any family member as a suspect or announced evidence linking a relative to the children's disappearance.

About four months after the siblings vanished, Houston police received an anonymous phone call from a man claiming the children had not been kidnapped and were living with their paternal grandmother in Los Angeles, California. Investigators followed up on the tip because the family did have relatives in the area. After checking the information, police determined the claim was false. The caller was never identified.

Over the years, investigators have released age-progressed images showing what Michael and Pamela might look like as adults. Although numerous tips have been received, none have led to their recovery. No arrests have ever been made, and no confirmed sightings have been verified.

More than four decades after they disappeared, the case of Michael and Pamela Mayfield remains unsolved. Authorities continue to classify the case as an involuntary non-family abduction and encourage anyone with information to contact law enforcement.
